What is Houston Vanguard HISD Gifted Program ?

What is HISD Gifted Program ? The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has programs for academically advanced children through grades K to 12. These gifted programs are known as Vanguard Programs and are specially built for gifted children in Houston. Vanguard serves ‘profoundly gifted students’ (students who score in the 99 th percentile on an IQ test) as well as ‘very bright students’ (students who score between 90 th to 96 th percentiles on an IQ test). Children need to be identified as gifted to be eligible for the HISD vanguard gifted program which can be through different components including grades and teacher recommendations.

Two options for Gifted & Talented Program.

Both Vanguard Magnet and Vanguard Neighborhood programs are designed children who excel in general intellectual ability paired with creative thinking and leadership skill. They both provide a distinguished curriculum by altering the complexity, depth and pacing of the general school program. The admissions criteria for both are same and one child can apply for either one of the two programs.

Parents need to work with practice questions belonging at their child’s grade level along with one level up and one level below their grade level. It is advisable to make your child familiar with the test format as well as the type of questions asked and keep practicing more and more sample questions.
